In response to the government request in 2019 for councils to declare a climate change emergency in order to encourage action at a local level, our parish council set up a working party to address climate change issues.
The Climate and Nature Action Strategy was first written in 2020 and updated regularly in order to provide a framework outlining all aspects of relevant council practice and identifying actions needed to help fight global warming.
Our Parish has a diverse mix of Local Green Spaces such as parks, recreation areas, allotments, a graveyard and grassed areas. These are protected under our
neighbourhood plan.
The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has visited our main Local Green Spaces in order to advise us how they might be cared for and developed to encourage wildlife and protect their habitats.
One of the aims of our Biodiversity Strategy is to create an audit of biodiversity within our parish. In June 2026 we will stage our first community BioBlitz event which will contribute to this. Community volunteers and expert naturalists will record as much as possible about the scope of natural life in our community.

In Spring and in Autumn, volunteers across the UK carry out water testing of the rivers and streams in their local area as part of the Great UK WaterBlitz
This helps to build a local picture of freshwater health, pinpoint pollution and hold polluters to account. Anyone can take part in this event and, so far, our Parish Council Climate and Nature group together with the 1st Holymoorside Scouts have participated and posted results.
